Three days on the top deck of the cruise ship Costa Allegra in the Indian Ocean. Tropical heat, a thousand people, minimal comfort… Swiss television TSR reported on their return to shore, after a holiday gone wrong.

An engine room fire and failure of an emergency generator left the Costa Allegra holiday-makers adrift. A French fishing boat throws them a line. To protect against pirates, there are nine Italian marines. France3 television reported.

The Costa line is based in Genoa, Italy, and is controlled by the British-American Carnival Corporation. The brand has taken a beating in the last two months, and has had to make huge compensation payments, Italian RAI2 television reported.
