Anger over a proposed high-speed rail link between France and Italy has erupted into violence in at least one of several co-ordinated demonstrations.
A number of police officers were said to have been injured in clashes with protestors in Val de Susa on the Italian side of the border. It came after activists blocked a motorway.
There were similar but less violent demonstrations across the country. It was the most serious widespread protest facing Prime Minister Mario Monti’s technocrat government since it took office in November. However, it insists it will go ahead with the project.
