EU countries are thought to be on the verge of granting Serbia candidate status to join the 27 member bloc.
French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe was quoted, ‘‘It’s done; the conditions set have been meet.’‘
Serbian President Boris Tadic, who was in Brussels, welcomed the potential step: “This is not the end, this is not the end, I am expecting your work (Tadic was addressing EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton) and the work of your colleagues to be very fruitful and I think Serbia is deserving of candidate status.”
The possible green light, which is seen as crucial towards opening formal EU accession talks, follows last week’s deal between Serbia over its breakaway province Kosovo.
That included, among other things, Belgrade and Pristina agreeing to jointly manage their border, the scene of several violent flare ups.
