It was a fantastic night for French cinema at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood, with silent black-and-white film The Artist collecting the Oscar for Best Film. Lead role Jean Dujardin scooped the gong for Best Actor, while Michel Hazanavicius was chosen as Best Director.
Meryl Streep won the award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. There were supporting role prizes for Octavia Spencer (The Help) and Christopher Plummer (Beginners).
Martin Scorsese’s Hugo won five Oscars in technical categories such as special effects and cinematography. The highly acclaimed A Separation became the first Iranian film to win an Oscar, in the Best Foreign Language category.
