A group of Mexican researchers say they may have discovered a vaccine to cure heroin addiction.
Scientists at the National Institute for Psychiatry tested it first on mice.
They will shortly begin clinical trials with humans.
A patent has aleady been filed in the US.
“What the vaccine tries to do is to immunise the person so that the drug has no effect and that the person stops using it,” said the institute’s director, Maria Elena Medina.
“The formula that we have in the clinic comes from trials with animals and this has allowed us to make some significant progress.”
No drug addiction vaccines have made it to market so far.
If succcessful, the heroin vaccine could ease US demand for the drug, which causes major violence in Mexico.
The heroin industry prodvide billions of dollars to Mexico’s drug barons each year.
