Sweden celebrates birth of a princess

Sweden is celebrating the arrival of a princess.

Crown Princess Victoria gave birth to a girl on Thursday morning.

The baby is now second in line to the throne behind her mother.

Victoria’s husband and former fitness trainer Prince Daniel was by her side and cut the umbilical cord.

The royal couple left the clinic just four and a half hours after the birth.

The pair married in Stockholm in June 2010.

Victoria is popular among Swedes: a TNS poll suggests she enjoys an approval rating of 74 percent.

The baby’s name will be announced before the weekend.

She is the first grandchild for King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

The king has seen his popularity wane after a biography alleged he had an affair with a Swedish pop singer and attended sex parties.

He denied the claims but has just a 46 percent approval rating, according to the TNS poll.
