An over-sized caricature of former German President Christian Wulff proves he has gone, but has not been forgotten. It is on show at a carnival in the city of Mainz, back in the capital the serious discussions on his replacement are underway.
Social websites have been trumpeting opinions. Chancellor Angela Merkel has been sidetracked from the eurozone troubles. Her standing at home is in sharp focus. Joachim Gauck a candidate last time remains a political favourite. Who is the people’s choice?
Our correspondent, Wolfgang Spindler in Berlin says, “Germany is looking for the next President before the Berlinale – the film festival -has ended. I asked people what the next head of state should be like at Berlin’s fast food emporium, The Currywurst, Germany’s fish and chips.”
Currywurst is an icon of the country a staple diet enschrined in Germany’s history and culture. As people enjoyed their carry-out they voiced their opinions.
“The next person should be female, young, dynamic with great ideas and certainly neutral,” said one woman.
“He should be a little bit older, could be Mr Schäuble, the finance minister. He should be a grandfather, a father figure for our nation,” opined one man while another said, “He should be like Currywurst, that would be a good pre-condition and beside that, integrity would be nice. We shall see.”
A candidate acceptable to all political parties could be announced on Sunday.
