A sad homecoming for Whitney

Whitney Houston’s body is back in her hometown of Newark before being finally laid to rest.

In a last journey befitting a pop idol, the singer’s coffin was transported to New Jersey from Los Angeles by private plane and gold-painted hearse.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday at the Baptist church where she first sang in public.

Fans gathered outside the funeral home where her body is lying. One said: “I am so happy and glad. My friend.. she bought me here, she’s one of her family. This is her home, this is her house and we’re happy she’s here with us. She’s come back home, so I hope she rests in peace.”

Another fan said: “Whitney was considered family to me, and my family. I love her, I’m going to miss her. The last time we saw each other was in church and it was a beautiful Easter Sunday, for which she gave God the glory”.

It’s still unclear what exactly casued the death of the 48-year old, who had drug and alcohol problems. She was found unconscious in her hotel bathroom in Los Angeles on Saturday. The results of an autopsy will not be released for some weeks.
