A call by Egyptian unions for a general strike appeared to have failed yesterday after religious leaders urged people not to turn up to protest.
The strike had been called to press the country’s military rulers to leave power immediately, including Islamists who dominate parliament.
The Egyptian capital Cairo saw no major disruption, with businesses and public transport operating as normal.
Our correspondent in Cairo Mustafa Bag said they had expected to see higher levels of civil disobedience.
