As violence continues to claim lives in Syria Russia has dismissed a fresh Arab initiative at the UN to end the bloodshed.
The latest unverified images from Homs appear to show the rebel city under bombardment, as it has been for the past week.
Against this backdrop Saudi Arabia has circulated a new draft resolution at the UN similar to the one recently rejected by Russia and China. However, a senior Russian diplomat has described it as “the same unbalanced…text”.
The conflict has intensified since the failed resolution, with deadly attacks in the relatively peaceful city of Aleppo, and fighting even spilling over into neighbouring states.
At least three people were killed in gunfights between supporters and opponents of President President Bashar al-Assad in street in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli. Several Lebanese soldiers were reported to have been injured in the operation to restore order.
