Rick Santorum has completed a clean sweep in the race to become the Republican presidential candidate.

He has won the Minnesota and Colorado caucuses and taken the Missouri primary. It is a major boost for the former Pennsylvannia Senator who has only previously won one of the five contests.

The result is a setback for the former governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney. He was expected to win easily in Colorado given his previous victories but he still remains favourite to take on President Obama in November’s election.

Newt Gingrich was not on the ballot in Missouri, allowing Santorum the chance to consolidate conservative votes and to compete directly with Romney.

Coming in second in Minnesota, US Congressman Ron Paul was delighted to knock Romney into third.

All eyes are now on Arizona and Michigan later this month.
