Santorum's hat-trick reignites Republican race

Rick Santorum has reopened the race to become the US Republican party’s presidential nominee.

He has upset the odds by recording a string of successes in Colorado, Missouri and Minnesota, victories which may rejuvenate his hopes of taking on Barack Obama in November.

The result means things are likely to be a lot harder for the favourite Mitt Romney. Despite massively outspending his rivals, his vast campaign will now have to refocus to fight back the challenge from the surging senator from Pennsylvania.

“This was a good night for Rick Santorum. I want to congratulate Senator Santorum, wish him the very best. We’ll keep on campaigning down the road, but I expect to become our nominee, with your help,” said Romney.

Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, could now also face questions about his post-Florida strategy which saw him largely ignore the Midwestern states.

Newt Gingrich was not on the ballot in Missouri and was crushed in the other two states, allowing Santorum the chance to consolidate conservative votes and to compete directly with Romney.

Coming in second in Minnesota, US Congressman Ron Paul was delighted to knock Romney into third.

All eyes are now on Arizona and Michigan later this month.
