Europe’s workforce is ageing rapidly. By 2060 around 40 per cent of the EU’s population will be 55 or over. Faced with such a ticking demographic timebomb the EU’s European Year for Active Ageing aims to make it easier for so called ‘Silver Workers’ to stay in their jobs longer. Brussels is committing one billion euros to the project and says by doing what its doing, Europe’s older generation will play a more active role in society.
