A NATO missile shield that has been criticised by Russia will be based at a US military facility in Germany.

Ramstein Air Base is the headquarters of America’s air force is located near Frankfurt and it is a NATO installation.

The missile shield will also have sites in Spain, Poland and Romania.

With Poland and Romania so close, Russia is against the plan, arguing the missile shield will upset the balance of power in the region.

In response, Moscow has hinted at military counter-measures, including deploying Iskander missiles in the Kaliningrad enclave, in between NATO members Poland and Lithuania.

NATO claims the missile shield will be used to protect Europe from potential attacks by ‘rogue states’. It is due to be completed by 2020.
