As Republican voters go to the polls in the Florida presidential primary Mitt Romney is in the box seat with a double-digit lead over his closest challenger Newt Gingrich.

Romney has spent millions in negative campaigning against Gingrich after the former US House speaker pulled off a surprise win in South Carolina.

Gingrich described Romney’s 17.5 million dollar assault as “carpet bombing.”

Gingrich has painted Romney as a tax hiking “Massachusetts moderate,” moderate being a dirty word in Republican circles.

Insults are part and parcel of this presidential nomination campaign, for Romney Gingrich is an untrustworthy Washington influence peddler.

Florida is the largest state to vote so far and could act as a barometer for the rest of the campaign.
