Glen Close stars in the title role of Albert Nobbs, a film set in the 1800s, which deals with a woman who dresses as a man in order to get a job. The resulting ramifications provide all the subsequent drama.

Critics have received the film with mixed reviews, some feeling that there is something distasteful about a woman dressed as a man courting a woman who is unaware of the deception. Others have disagreed, saying the film is a very sincere study of the prisons we build for ourselves.

But whichever way it goes, everyone agrees that the central performances are touching and poignant and the film deserves a place on the “to see” list.
