The Screen Actors Guild awards recognise top performances in film and television. This year Jean Dujardin won the best actor award for his role in ‘The Artist’. When asked how he felt about winning the award, knowing that the last seven winners have gone on to win an Oscar, the actor sang the French national anthem.
Viola Davis won the best actress award and Octavia Spencer took best supporting actress for their roles in The Help. Accepting her award, Viola Davis said: “During the course of promoting this movie and having to kind of defend my choices in playing a maid in 1963 Mississippi, in 2011 I’ve had to find my voice. I’ve had to find my voice as a woman of colour, an artist.”
The SAG awards are regarded as indicators of what and who might win at the Oscars, which this year will take place in Los Angeles on 26 February.
