Portuguese workers killed in dam landslide

world news

| |

Three workers have been killed in a landslide during the construction of a dam in Portugal.

Initial reports said it was caused by the movement of a machine being used on site but this was denied by the national power firm behind the project. It insists the tragedy happened during the workers’ lunch break, suggesting the landslide was a natural phenomenon.

Already slammed by environmentalists, the plan to build a dam at the river Tua in the northern Braganza region, now faces further criticism. Security measures at the site are in the spotlight with an enquiry underway.
