Further explosions in Nigeria as death toll rises

As the clean up continues on the streets of Nigeria’s northern city of Kano after Friday’s gun and bomb attacks by Islamist insurgents two more explosions have rocked the country.

The targets were two Christian churches in the village of Bauchi. There were no casualties in this latest incident which has raised concerns that the country is sliding further into chaos.

Bauchi is in the north east of the country. An eye witness said one of the churches was completely destroyed.

The number of dead on Friday in Kano has now been put at least 178 by a senior doctor at one of the city’s main hospitals.

President Goodluck Jonathan a Christian from the south of the country has been criticised for failing to grasp the gravity of the crisis in the north.

A spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he is appalled at the frequency and intensity of the recent attacks in Nigeria.
