A stone’s throw from the Italian island of Giglio the cruise ship Costa Concordia lies with a great gash in her side. The accident layered the unexpected with the surreal. Italian RAI1 reported.

The captain’s actions that night beggar belief, according to radio communications between Francesco Schettino and a harbour master, which were recorded. He left the ship before the passengers. France 2 reported.

Time was wasted on the Costa Concordia, and lives were lost. The chain of command delayed taking action, every minute compounding the danger. Swiss TSR television reported.

The Costa Concordia was sunk because it was following a tradition of sailing in close to shore for a wave-by salute. For a large ship in a tight passage, this is dangerous. France 3 reported.
