This week saw Brussels fire a broadside at Budapest over its new constitution. The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, is demanding changes to laws it considers undemocratic, particularly legislation affecting Hungary’s judiciary and central bank.

Iran has also bubbled back to the surface. In addition to its nuclear activity Tehran’s threat to shut the Hormuz Straits – a strategic route – is causing concern. The EU Council, led by Denmark, is pushing hard to toughen sanctions against Iran, notably working out measures to stop all the country’s oil imports into the bloc.

German social democrat Martin Schulz also became the new president of the European Parliament. His election, however, did not pass without controversy. All that in this week’s programme. For more, click on the link above.
