While the world is holding one man responsible for the running aground of the Italian cruise ship, Captain Francesco Schettino is not without his own supporters.
He continues to deny wrongdoing although is at the moment under house arrest in his home town of Meta di Sorrento on suspicion of manslaughter and abandoning his ship.
But neighbours like Gianluca Guida have more faith: “My relatives live here and I believe he did everything that needed to be done. I am proud of what he did.”
Rosa Tito, another neighbour demands of a reporter “Who told you that he abandoned the ship? Who is saying so? The coast guard who was comfortably sitting in the control room and yelling orders through the radio?”
Despite a recording of the coast guard telling Schettino to return to the ship along with the captain’s own admission he sailed too close to Giglio island, locals are standing by him.
If anyones is at fault they think its the media which has invaded the small town and appears to be conducting its own trial.
