Five foreign tourists have been killed in Ethiopia’s remote northern Afar region. It is believed the attack was carried out by gunman crossing into the country from neighbouring Eritrea.
German nationals are said to be among those killed in the shooting, two other tourists were seriously injured while a third escaped unhurt.
Their nationalities have not been released.
The area Afar is known to be a haunt of Ethiopian rebels and Eritrean bandits.
The two countries have been bitter adversaries since Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993.
The only foreigners who usually enter the region are researchers and aid workers.
