Freedom for Ukraine’s opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko must be a priority for the newly elected President of the European Parliament, Italian MEP Licia Ronzulli has said.

Together with other European Members of Parliament the Italian politician wore a T-shirt emblazoned with, “Free Yulia”, during a plenary session in Strasbourg.

Ronzulli called on Martin Schulz to put the rights of the jailed former prime minister at the top of the parliamentary agenda.

The member of the centre-right group the European People’s Party insisted Tymoshenko had been put in prison on trumped up charges.

“It is a fundamental violation of human rights. It’s a lynching”, the Italian MEP said.

Calling on Schulz to visit Tymoshenko, she argued the European Parliament had a duty to no longer ignore the situation in Ukraine.
