Gunmen have killed five foreign tourists and seriously injured two others in Ethiopia’s remote northern region, according to state television in Addis Ababa. The report said one tourist escaped unharmed.
A western diplomat said German nationals were among those killed.
The Afar region is known to be a haunt of Ethiopian rebels. Bandits and rebels from neighbouring Eritrea, Ethiopia’s enemy, are also active in the area.
