Thousands of football fans crammed into Istanbul’s Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium to pay a final tribute to Lefter Küçükandonyadis, who died from heart failure at the age of 86 last week.
The Fenerbahçe and Turkey icon was not only remembered by his own fans, but by the supporters of the team’s rivals, Galatasaray and Beşiktaş who also turned out to say their final fairwells.
Nicknamed the distinguished professor Küçükandonyadis, whose father was of Greek descent was known world wide for his dribbling and scoring abilities.
He scored 423 goals in 615 matches during two separate spells at Fenerbahçe.
In 1951 he became the first Turkish player to ply his trade overseas when he signed with Italian club Fiorentina.
He earned 50 caps for his country scoring 21 goals.
