More than 50 people have been killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq, in the latest attack on Shi’ite pilgrims. It happened near Basra at the end of Arbain, one of the most important events in the Shi’ite calendar.
According to police, the bomber was disguised as a policeman. One witness said he had been handing out food to pilgrims and blew himself up at a checkpoint as a group of women and children passed by. The blast left well over 100 people injured.
As every year, thousands of Shi’ite pilgrims have been making their way to the holy city of Kerbala. Dozens have been killed in bomb attacks in recent days. The last American troops have left Iraq and the country remains mired in a political crisis with the Shi’ite majority and Sunni minority in conflict.
