At least six people have reportedly been killed after a cruise ship ran aground off the coast of Italy.

According to coastguards, the Italian vessel took on water on Friday night and was listing about 20 degrees.

More than 4,000 people are understood to have been onboard.

Passengers and crew were being evacuated to the nearby island of Giglio, off the Tuscan coast.

Some are said to have jumped into the water.

The ship involved is the 290-metre long Costa Concordia.

The cause of the incident is being investigated.
