Sarkozy Lagarde crisis meeting

With the eurozone deeply mired in a debt crisis, International Monetary Fund head Christine Lagarde was in Paris on Wednesday for talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy on “the international economic situation”.

No details were forthcoming of their discussions, but Greece has to have been a major focus as well as how to prevent the debt crisis spreading to Italy and what can be done at an EU summit scheduled for January 30 that is expected to focus on efforts to boost growth.

Pressure was increased on political and financial leaders from comments by the ratings agency Fitch urging the European Central Bank to increase its purchases of eurozone government bonds to prevent what it called a “cataclysmic” collapse of the euro.

Lagarde is fresh from talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.
