Monti loses junior minister to bribery claims

A junior minister in Italy’s government of technocrats, Carlo Malinconico, has resigned over allegations he was favoured with free hotel stays in 2007 and the following year.

The minister, with responsibilities for newspaper and publishing industries, denies any wrongdoing.

He is the first casualty from Prime Minister Mario Monti’s government, which took office late last year.
