Argentina and Barcelona striker Lionel Messi has won FIFA’s Ballon d’Or for a third year running on Monday following the award ceremony in Zurich.
The 24-year old becomes the second player ever to be named FIFA’s footballer of the year for three successive years; Michel Platini achieved the feat from 1983 to 1985
Messi, who beat Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barca teammate Xavi to the prize, also joins Platini, Yohann Cruyff and Marco Van Basten in the elite club of three-time winners.
