Turkey’s former military supremo has spent his second night behind bars after his unprecedented arrest.

Ilker Basbug is accused of plotting a coup attempt.

The Islamist background of the ruling AK Party led to suspicions that religion was making creeping advances in Turkey, something the prime minister has denied.

Turkey’s president Abdullah Gul said: “There is a legal order in Turkey. I’d like to say that nobody can be declared a criminal without a court decision.”

Hundreds of academics and military personnel have been arrested during an investigation into a nationalist network called Ergenekon.
