Countdown to 2012 is on

The incredible light effects that make up New Year celebrations in Sydney, Australia have being tested for the moment the clock strikes midnight.

More than 1.5 million people are expected to turn out for the famous fireworks waterfall on the Sydney harbour bridge.

Light displays have been placed all over the banks of the harbour.

In New York’s Times Square, the annual dropping of the ball has taken place every year since 1907.

In preparation, the 3.7 metre Waterford crystal ball has been raised into position so it can begin its 60 second descent to mark the moment when the new year begins.

And in Rio de Janeiro, around 2 million tourists have begun arriving to be part of the year end party on Copacabana beach.

Brazilian police have stepped up patrols at key locations and say they are confident that with the city’s drugs gangs under control and crime falling, the celebrations will pass off peacefully.
