At least 14 people died in Venezuela when a petrol tanker overturned and exploded on a main road, setting fire to eight cars and a bus.

The accident happened on the Panamerican Highway outside the capital, Caracas.

Witnesses said the tanker was speeding and was spilling gasoline before it reached the site of the crash. “The truck was losing gasoline from the time it was down there, the hose had fallen on the ground. And up there was where it caught on fire and that was disastrous,” said Lorenzo Gonzalez at the scene of the crash.

Authorities say the driver of the truck, who was unhurt, has been detained and will be charged in connection with the incident.
