Europe marks the turn of a year of economic crisis

The crisis can not be ignored in Portugal, where austerity is hitting the buying power of households and business opportunities every day. It is a depressing atmosphere and one which has affected the professionals who organise parties. That was the theme on a report broadcast by RTP.

With the crisis, suicides are increasing in Europe. Greece has recorded a 40 percent rise in the first half of 2011 compared to 2010. It is a time of year when people in need are most fragile. Volunteer organisations are very busy. TSR was on the streets to meet volunteers working to help the suicidal.

One area that has not been affected by the crisis – in fact they even make a profit – are games of chance. The lottery has never flourished as much as at the moment with its promise of instant wealth especially in France where the dream merchants are constantly reinventing their formula. Reportage from France 3.

In Russia, New Year’s Eve, kicks off the festivities for New Year when presents are given out. It offered a break in the middle of the political turmoil with cities dressing up in all their finery. RTR went on a guided tour of St Petersburg.
