Police in Myanmar have confirmed that at least 17 people have been killed and over 80 others injured in an explosion in the country’s main city of Yangon.

The blast happened at a chemical storage warehouse, triggering a fire which quickly spread to a nearby shipyard.

The cause is not known but the authorities have discounted it being an explosive device.

However bomb blasts are common in Myanmar, which has been torn by rebellions against successive governments since independence in 1948.
