Reports say that credit card hackers are threatening to publish private emails described as damaging, after an attack on a US-based intelligence company’s website.
Hackers claiming to represent the group known as Anonymous stole large amounts of data and said they had used credit card details of the company’s clients to make donations to charity.
The victim of the attack, Stratfor, has closed its site and has posted messages on Facebook , admitting that members’ credit card data have been stolen and warning that the hackers may target its supporters.
Clients of Stratfor – which has been dubbed ‘the Shadow CIA’ – are said to include the US government, foreign embassies and the United Nations.
However there is confusion over the hackers’ identity – according to one claim, Anonymous was not involved in the attack on Stratfor.
