Just south of the border, defectors from North Korea marked Kim Jong-il’s funeral by releasing giant balloons containing 200,000 anti-Pyongyang leaflets.
Sent off towards the north, the messages called for a popular uprising against the Kim dynasty.
“North Koreans have been living like slaves for 66 years under Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il,” said Park Sang-hak, the leader of the defector group. “How can they live as slaves under Kim Jong-un who is a little kid, like a dirty puppy? We must not accept a three-generation succession for the North Korean people.”
Activists said the balloons contained a total of 1,000 US dollars. They hope this will help Northerners overcome their fear of punishment and pick up the leaflets to read the revolutionary messages inside.
