Seven years on, a vigil has been held on the Thai island of Phuket to remember the victims of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami.

‘Light up Phuket’ is an annual event on Patong Beach where candles are lit to honour those who died.

In Thailand, an estimated 5,400 people were killed in the disaster. Nearly 2000 of the dead were foreign tourists.

In total, more than 230,000 people in 11 countries died after a 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck under the Indian Ocean.
