Kim Jong-un sheds tears at wake for dead father

North Korean television has broadcast new pictures of the new leader Kim Jong-un wiping away tears at his father’s wake in Pyongyang.

The programme said the film was shot on Monday. The funeral of Kim Jong-il, who died ten days ago, is due to take place on Wednesday.

Last Saturday, a week after his death, official media referred to the dead leader’s son as “supreme commander” of North Korea’s armed forces, the first time he has been described officially as a military chief. It is thought Kim Jong-un will share power with his uncle and other military leaders.

He was appointed to the position of general in September last year but otherwise is not thought to have had previous military experience.

There are hopes for a slight thaw in north-south relations following the visit of two delegations from South Korea to Pyongyang. The wife of former President Kim Dae Jung, and the wife of the Hyundai business group’s former chairman, travelled to the North Korean capital to pass on their condolences, but they will not be attending Kim Jong-il’s funeral.
