In Britain, the first day of the so-called January sales turned to tragedy after a man was stabbed to death on London’s busy Oxford Street.
Police believe the 18-year-old died after rivalry between two groups of teenagers turned violent.
As many as 11 people were arrested following the stabbing, just hours after stores re-opened from the Christmas holidays.
Tens of thousands of people battled against a public transport strike in the British capital to reach the first day of the sales.
Several stores closed for the day after the stabbing.
Later, a second man was left with leg wounds after another stabbing incident on the same street.
Police said it was too early to say if both incidences were linked.
