Iraqi authorities say a car bomb in Baghdad has killed at least six people and wounded more than 30 in an attack on the interior ministry.

Police say a suicide bomber drove his car into a security cordon outside the building. Four policemen were among the dead.

The blast followed a wave of explosions last Thursday that killed at least 72 people in Baghdad.

Sunni insurgents are suspected of targeting the ministry following last week’s arrest warrant issued for the country’s Sunni vice president.

Iraq’s Shi’ite prime minister Nuri al-Maliki announced the move and asked parliament to fire his Sunni deputy, prompting fears of sectarian turmoil.

The last US troops have left the country but the prime minister has asked the Americans for more weapons.
