A gunfight involving different factions of the army in Guinea Bissau reportedly forced the country’s prime minister Carlos Gomes to seek refuge in a foreign embassy for safety reasons.

There are conflicting accounts of why the violence broke out in Bissau, capital of the west African nation with a history of coup attempts.

Tensions may have been flared by an order to arrest the army’s chief of staff, who was apparently later freed by his troops.

However, the fighting may also have been a protest by soldiers seeking a rise in wages.
