The Dutch Football Federation has overturned the decision to give a red card to AZ Alkmaar goalkeeper, Esteban on Wednesday.

He was given the card when a supporter invaded the pitch and tried to attack him in the 37th minute of the game against Ajax. He was more than a match for the 19 year old, and pushed him to the ground before kicking him twice.

The referee later defended his decision, saying:

“I understand the goalkeeper defends himself, but when the supporter is lying on the pitch he can walk away. He kicked the supporter and that’s why he received a red card.”

The Alkmaar coach pulled his players off the pitch following the incident bringing an early end to the match. The Dutch Football Federation are still deciding whether to replay the game or hand it to Ajax who were 1-0 up at the time.
