Hundreds missing after boat sinks near Indonesia

More than 300 people are missing after a boat carrying illegal migrants sank off the coast of east Java in Indonesia.

According to an official from the East Java Disaster Mitigation Centre, only 76 of the 380 people onboard have been rescued.

Reports claim passengers included at least 40 children.

The vessels is believed to have been an overcrowded wooden boat attempting to reach Australia. People smugglers often use Indonesia as a transit point.

Many of the passengers are thought to have come from middle eastern countries including Afghanistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia.
