Typhoon kills 200 people in the Philippines

At least 200 people are dead and some 400 are missing after a typhoon hit the southern Philippines.

Typhoon Washi battered the region of Mindanao on Friday. Heavy caused many rivers to overflow.

Winds reaching up to 90 kilometres an hour triggered mass floods and landslides in the towns of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro.

Military officials say they have recovered 97 bodies, mainly children.

Washi is currently moving northwest and is set to hit the South China Sea by Sunday.

Authorities say they are unable to estimate the damage done until rescue efforts are over.

Typhoon Washi has displaced an estimated 5,000 people.
