The Protester is Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2011. The choice recognises the impact of people power across the globe.
It includes the popular revolutions of the Arab Spring to the Occupy movement in the US and beyond and Europe’s demonstrations against austerity.
Public sector workers have taken to the streets of Barcelona to protest against a fresh round of austerity cuts by Catalonia’s regional government.
Anger is rising over measures planned for next year. They follow earlier belt-tightening including a 10 per cent reduction in health spending.
