Poles mark 30th anniversary of martial law

Demonstrations have been held across Poland to mark the 30th anniversary of martial law and the crackdown against the Solidarity trade union.
 
It was imposed by Poland’s last communist leader, General Wojciech Jaruzelski. Around 10,000 people were interned and an estimated 100 killed.
 
In a poll, 57 per cent believed martial law saved the country from invasion by Soviet troops.
