The Syrian opposition has called for a boycott of local elections taking place in the country.
The vote is going ahead despite violence which has seen the Middle Eastern state condemned by the international community. Authorities said the vote will be freer than in previous years, although they have refused to allow international election monitors.
Meanwhile activists near Homs were promoting a mass strike, waving the old Syrian flag which dates back half a century to the era before Assad’s Baath party seized control. They were trying to encourage Syrians who may be frightened to join the uprising.
New amateur video showed what it says were clashes between Syrian forces and protesters in the city of Deraa, although Damascus continues to deny any crackdown.
