Tear gas in the forest amid Italy rail protest

Italian police have clashed with protesters trying to reach the construction site of a controversial high-speed rail link between Turin and Lyon in France.

Police fired tear gas; some protesters wearing gas masks threw canisters back at them.

The new line will pass through huge tunnels in the Alps. Demonstrators and local people argue the project is a waste of money and will damage the environment.

There have been protests ever since the new line was agreed ten years ago.
